What a weekend for Navy sports! Navy swimmers and divers swept the Black Knights in an N-Star event and Navy football broke Army’s three year winning streak and reclaimed the Commander-in-Chief’s Trophy! Beat Army!
On Thursday, Navy’s swimmers and divers swept West Point’s Black Knights by scores of 221-79 in the women’s meet and 194-106 in the men’s meet.
The Navy women’s team won 13 of the 16 contested events and placed first, second and third in eight of the 12 individual events to win the meet for a 31st-straight season. The Navy men’s squad won 11 events and placed first, second and third in five races to notch its 29th victory in a row in the series.
Our Navy divers also claimed the top three placings in both the women’s three-meter event and the men’s one-meter board.
In addition to destroying Army in Philadelphia, our head football coach Ken Niumatalolo has been named the 2019-20 winner of the Stallings Award, which is awarded annually to a college football head coach who is both a humanitarian and an exceptional coach. The award is named in honor of Gene Stallings to pay tribute to his son, Johnny, and those who triumph no matter their circumstances.
Coach Ken Niumatalolo has also been named one of 10 finalists for the 2019 Paul “Bear” Bryant Award, which recognizes the country’s top college football coaches for their contributions both on and off the field. The award is voted on by the National Sports Media Association and is the only college coaching honor selected after all bowl games are concluded.
Coach Niumatalolo was also named the American Athletic Conference Coach of the Year, has led Navy to a 10-2 record, the Commander-In-Chief’s Trophy, a share of the American Athletic Conference West Division title and a spot in the prestigious Liberty Bowl opposite Kansas State. Saturday’s win over Army made him the winningest coach in the history of the Army-Navy game.
Speaking of the AutoZone Liberty Bowl, Navy will be playing against Kansas State University on Tuesday, December 31, 2019 at Liberty Bowl Memorial Stadium in Memphis, TN. Game Time is 3:45 EST, which will be televised on ESPN.
