After leaving the Academy, Bill graduated with a BS in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas. After college, he worked as an exploration drilling engineer for Exxon, then served two years in the Army, receiving a medical discharge. He then worked his way up from a draftsman to become a Professional Engineer with a prestigious consulting firm in Austin, Texas where he was qualified in HVAC, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, energy conservation, and software design. He then went to graduate school at Texas and in 2001 earned an MS in aerospace engineering and was close to a Ph.D. in mathematical physics when he started getting severe vision problems. He has since been unable to work in engineering and has devoted himself to writing novels, screenplays, and continuing his Ph.D. research in orbital and celestial mechanics.
