Obituary
Frederick Asa Hilder, Jr., CDR Ret., 61
December 27, 1955 – May 01, 2018
Frederick Asa Hilder Jr., age 61, born on December 27, 1956 in Wilmington, Delaware, passed away on May 1, 2018 following an eleven-month battle with glioblastoma. He is survived by his wife, Cindy Hilder, and their six children, Cortney Sapp and husband Chris, Brandon Hilder and wife Jennifer, Daniel Wood and wife Natalia, Timothy Wood and girlfriend Kelsey Plante, Matthew Hilder, and Olivia Hilder. Siblings, Anne Hilder and husband Mike Smith, Janet Krupski, and Charlie Hilder. Mother-in-law, Shirley Carpenter. As well as nieces and nephews.
Fred graduated from The United States Naval Academy in 1978 with a Bachelor of Science in Marine Engineering. He received a Master of Divinity in 1986 from South Eastern Baptist Seminary, and a Master of Education in 2009 from Liberty University. He served 28 years in the Navy — five years as Surface Warfare Officer as well as Lay Leader, and twenty-two years as Chaplin.
After retiring from the Navy in 2010, Fred enjoyed working as a guidance counselor at Grafton Middle and High School where he cared for many students, families, and faculty members. Fred developed countless relationships throughout his naval career, treasuring many priceless memories of all the wonderful people he met, including classmates, ship mates, students and families, as well as the neighborhood community where he and Cindy raised their children.
Fred found the Lord at fifteen years old and dedicated his life entirely to serving Him. He met his wife Cindy at Kings Dominion, and the two have been married for 26 years. Fred had a powerful spirit of benevolence and hospitality. People have said of Fred that knowing him has been an honor, and that his voice and smile will remain with them for years to come. Fred was a model of faith, love, and trust in Christ. He was thankful for every blessing and his kindness was a bright light wherever he went. Fred was a dear, sweet man who always wanted the best for everyone, and will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.
